Hammerfest är en fin liten stad vars historia går långt tillbaks i tiden. Deras huvudsakliga näring har varit Ishavsfiske och fisken har de bl a bytt mot korn från Ryssland, sk Pomorhandel. Idag är det väl fortfarande fisket som står för stor del av försörjningen, men jag tror att även Hurtigrutten bidrar med en del inkomster för de boende.
Trots att staden ligger så utsatt och har blivit ödelagd av både orkaner och bränder så har den rest sig igen varje gång. Sista gången staden blev förstörd var under andra världskriget när Tyskarna retirerade från Nordkalotten. Det kom order direkt från Hitler att allt skulle förstöras och att man inte fick visa någon som helst medlidande med de boende. Detta innebar att många norrmän tvångsförflyttades från hela nord Norge och så även från Hammerfest som blev total förstört, bara ett litet gravkapell skall ha funnits kvar efter att tyskarna lämnade den 10 februari 1945. Om allt detta kan man lära sig mer på Gjenreisningsmuséet i Hammerfest, vilket vi gjorde.
Som en liten parantes kan jag nämna att nere vid Hurtigruttkajen, där turistinformationen finns och där de flesta turister hamnar förr eller senare, nämns inte med en stavelse att Hammerfest blev totalförstört av tyskarna 1945, däremot finns det en Isbjörnsklubb som man kan gå med i.
Efter all denna historia var vi tvungna att ge oss ut på tur, upp på berget för att få lite perspektiv på saker och ting.
